Highly recommended for all walled towns

No comments:
The Civic Trust and the UK Government Department of Transport have just issued revised guidance for the design of streets where people and traffic mix. It is highly recommended and Street Design for All is available through this link. It is a shame that none of the examples of good practice quoted are from walled towns - Chichester, Chester or York might have been cited but have not sufficiently carried through the 'de-cluttering' of their mixed use streets. 'De-cluttering' means doing without or removing all those signs and anti-pedestrian barriers so loved by 20th Century Highway Engineers.
Examples of bad practice could have been shown from walled towns - this advice can be used to remove them. Good examples can be found across Europe in walled towns. Neither good nor bad will now be named (and shamed or rewarded) in this post but further examples will be found and walled towns are invited to submit thier best practice and acknowledge where they can make improvements.

Update to China links page- a Dissertation on York's City walls

No comments:
The China links page now includes a link to a Dissertation on York's walls by Nana Zheng. It is big file that takes some time to load.
I quote below an article "THE CITY BEYOND WALLS - interview with Mr David Bruce" which shows how the EWT is perceived by an interviewer from another quarter of the world, Nana Zheng, who has had it published in ARCHNEWS 2012:10 pp 114-8.in Chinese and English.

New EWT Newsletter

No comments:

June2012 EWT Newsletter is now published on the EWT website.
Contents includes
  • ·       a message from Peter van Roosmalen, President,(2)
    · An article introducing the Friends of York's Walls (3)
    · A note about the recently launched ENCLOSE European project (7)
    · An article on Woudrichen by Dr Frank Petter (8)
    · The full programme for the Annual Symposium in Gmuend in Kaernten, Austria September 2012 (10)
    · Future events include an Executive meeting in Cap de Pera Mallorca in spring 2013 and the 2013 Symposium and AGM in Derry/Londonderry later in the year.

The important news, announced in his Message, is that Peter van Roosmalen is resigning as President after the next AGM (in September at Gmuend). Nominations are to be submitted by the end of June. It is thought that two or three candidates will emerge. Voting by Member Towns will only be in person by a representative actually present at the AGM.
