Peter Osborne MBE 1921-2022 - Life President of Walled Towns Friendship Circle (later European Walled Towns).

No comments:

A Quaker service of celebration was held in Tenby on 1st August 2022 for Peter who recently died in Tenby aged 100 had had two or more successful careers before I came across his new Walled Towns Friendship Circle by the happy co-incidence that I had a student working in the near-to-Bristol walled town of Chepstow.

A year earlier (1989) the Circle had emerged from Peter's fertile imagination and with his enthusiasm tempered by his friends John Beynon, John Tipton and Bob Storey it gained support from the Wales Tourist Board and the European Commission as part of the European Year of Tourism’. This Appreciation is also available as a .pdf

Two Symposia in October 2016 - Hellevoetsluis EWT; Ulqin/Ulcinj - very different, both successful

No comments:
European Walled Towns Symposium in Holland and 'INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM KALAJA' in Montenegro.

Hellevoetsluis, Holland was a fortified naval port, and is now re-envisioned as the distinctive residential and commercial centre of a  new town in the Netherlands.

Ulcinj/Ulqin the most southerly walled town and resort in Montenegro. It's fine sunset silhouette was reflected in the Symposium logo, in an autumnal midday sun it seems at peace beside it's resort centre but at dawn it is thrillingly golden.(scroll down) Reports and presentations to follow.

Narva-Ivangorod nightingales

No comments:
Visiting deepest Bulgaria - 30 kilometres East of Veliko Tarnovo, have been listening out for a nightingale
and I'm reminded of the EWT Exec, hosted so brilliantly by Narva and including a visit to the Russian fortress across the river - Ivangorod. There we were greeted by the most aggressive chorus of nightingales, one of which I captured on camera and sound

Dubrovnik - worthy candidate for European Capital of Culture 2020

No comments:
Dubrovnik takes "this opportunity to kindly invite you to participate in our process of cultural transformation and co-create ideas of a future Dubrovnik." Following Valletta's successful bid for 2018, Dubrovnik represents different and important features that will make it a great and truly European Capital of Culture in 2020. "The concept of Dubrovnik's candidature is “City in the Making''. The concept builds on the dynamic principles of co-creation, mediation of dialogue, and ExChange (change through exchange). Accordingly, Dubrovnik's candidature is based on four thematic pillars: reclaiming public space, releasing creative energy, redefining identity, and reconnecting Dubrovnik with Europe and the World." See letter from the city for more deatils of bid and also my brief walled town description.

World Heritage Cities and personal identity as 'walled city'

No comments:
Matthias Ripp from Regensburg opens discussion of World Heritage Cities with his valuable model of an annual network report; I've also just discovered Grayson Perry's (Turner Prize winner) amazing walled city metaphor self 'portrait' called Map of Days newly acquired by Bath's Victoria Art Gallery thanks to their Friends and the ArtFund. You really need to see the original to find your way round the streets, rivers and features, named for his personality traits but you may be able to make out some on the bigger version below. His inspired re-imagination of the walled town for the 21st Century suggests the basis for a 'walled towns in art and culture' exhibition at a future Symposium perhaps at the World Heritage City of Valletta or even the Lowry inspiring Berwick-upon Tweed.

Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year to all Walled Towns

No comments:
The Twenty-five Year Anniversary Illustated Timeline leaflet of the European Walled Towns (originally Walled Towns Friendship Circle) is linked here
'Brightstowe' in 1581 is Bristol now and its walls are largely hidden but the Old City still values its history and its markets - the grand 25M high High Cross languishes in a garden in Wiltshire - would be great to see it back in the centre of Bristol qiute complicated to persuade both City to ask for it and the National Trust to release it.

Berwick-upon-Tweed - notes and links

No comments:
In 2012, Margaret and Bernard Shaw took Berwick-on-Tweed to the very edge of Russia. In Narva, Estonia they compared the two walled border towns. Their paper, which was published by Narva will be linked here when I can get an electronic version. Here is the presentation that they gave in Narva with its extensive illustrations.
The Bridges make the town - the fortifications keep both safe.
More about the Royal Border bridge is linked here.
Further notes about Narva and Berwick will be added soon and you are also invited to visit the website of the Narva Museum

IRISH WALLED TOWNS NETWORK: NEW ACTION PLAN 2014-16

No comments:
This action plan for Irish walled towns is a valuable model for similar proposals and plans for other national and regional walled towns networks across Europe. It covers different major themes - within the first "Achieving High Quality Places" are conservation, funding and research. The other themes are "Embracing Change", which includes working with European Walled Towns and the Historic Towns Forum. The third theme is " Creating value for locals and visitors" which includes supporting actions with direct local visibity in and for its member towns.
CLEARLY THIS FUNDED PLAN PRESENTS TREMENDOUS OPPORTUNITIES FOR TRANS-EUROPEAN PROJECTS with the walled towns of other member states.
To see IWTN new action plan from a network closely associated with  EWT, download here.
